I'm not sure if this qualifies as a 'quote' but my favorite is from Albert Einstein.

When he had a study offered to him at Princeton I believe, they asked him what he'd need beside a desk, chair, pad and pencil. His reply was a 'wastebasket to hold all my mistakes.'
